Gayle changes mind about stepping down as West Indies captain
By Kevin Lindon on July 30,2008
GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Chris Gayle has reportedly withdrawn his earlier decision to step down as captain of the West Indies cricket team.
Over the weekend, reports circulated around the Caribbean to the effect that the West Indies and Jamaican opener was likely to step down as captain.
Chief executive officer of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Dr Donald Peters was quoted as saying that he was aware that Gayle is considering not making himself available for the captaincy. However, this was not an official word from the hard-hitting Gayle.
According to reports, however, Gayle had indeed written a letter indicating he was not willing to make himself available, but this could not have been dealt with by the directors of the board during a recent meeting because it surfaced after they met. However, it was reported on Tuesday that Gayle has rescinded his decision and will be available to lead the West Indies team if chosen as captain.
West Indies were recently drubbed 5-0 in the One-Day series against Australia at home, after losing the three-Test series 2-0. Gayle was apparently unhappy with the selection policy for the last two ODIs and also questioned the policy of experimenting with several youngsters against the Australians.
Gayle has had mixed results as captain, winning two Tests out of five and seven ODIs out of 17. He led West Indies to two series wins in one-dayers, including an away victory against England last year and against the touring Sri Lankans recently. He presided over a surprise win in the first Test against South Africa in Johannesburg but his side went on to lose the next two games and the series. His other Test win came against Sri Lanka in Port-of-Spain to level the two match series.
Gayle has, however, battled with injuries during his tenure, sometimes struggling to keep fit for an entire tour. He returned home after the tour of South Africa suffering a thumb and hamstring injury. A groin problem ruled him out of the Indian Premier League.
